Black Bear and Coyote Exhibit:
A Story of Resilience and Adaptation
Greenway led the design and construction of the Black Bear and Coyote exhibit at Sequoia Park Zoo, collaborating closely with the Bear River Band of Rohnerville Rancheria, the City of Eureka, and the Zoo Foundation. The $3.5 million project spans one acre, providing meaningful habitat for both species and educational opportunities for visitors.
Sequoia Park Zoo Redwood Sky Walk:
An Awe Inspiring, Immersive Redwood Adventure
Greenway oversaw the development of the Redwood Sky Walk, a thrilling forest journey near the Sequoia Park Zoo. They led the design and construction of ramps, bridges, and a launch deck, as well as assisted the city in selecting a specialized design/build team for additional components, serving as the Owner’s Representative.
Sequoia Park:
More Fun for All
In 2017, the City of Eureka enlisted Greenway to upgrade the Sequoia Park meadow playground with funding from Redwood Capital Bank and the State of California. Greenway engaged the community through design charrettes, resulting in inclusive play areas and improved accessibility features. The project was completed on time and within budget by July 2021.
Humboldt Senior Resource Center PACE Clinic and
Adult Day Health Center:
Senior Wellness All Under One Roof
Greenway partnered with the Humboldt Senior Resource Center to develop a Program for All Inclusive Care for the Elderly (PACE) facility. The facility offers essential services in a pleasant, natural setting, including an exercise area and full kitchen.
McLean Community Center Campus:
A New Community Gathering Space
Greenway collaborated with the McLean Foundation to realize their vision of a community center on 37 acres near Newburg Park in Fortuna. Together, they developed a comprehensive plan for the campus, encompassing offices, classrooms, event spaces, recreational areas, and wildlife habitats. Over four years, Greenway led the project from master planning to construction management, achieving the client’s goal of creating a beautiful gathering place for the Eel River Valley community.
Hoopa Shopping Center:
The End of a Food Desert
Greenway played a pivotal role in addressing a community food dessert by collaborating closely with the Hoopa Tribal Council. They provided expertise in community engagement, planning, finance, architecture, engineering, and construction management to ensure the successful reopening of the grocery store. This collaborative effort resulted in the Tribe continuing to operate a profitable grocery store, serving the entire community effectively even after Greenway’s involvement.
Proposition 39:
Modernizing Local Schools
with Energy Efficiency
With Proposition 39 funding, Greenway led energy efficiency projects for 12 Northern California school districts over five years, installing solar panels, upgrading lighting, and heating systems to reduce costs and enhance learning environments.
Arcata Fire District:
Upgrading Our Local Fire Stations
Greenway spearheaded a strategic planning process for Arcata Fire, involving community members, fire personnel, and board members. This led to the decision to modernize existing facilities instead of pursuing a costly new one. Greenway then designed updated facilities that met current needs while allowing for future growth. Transforming a historical volunteer station into a modern facility for a full-time fire department in Arcata’s historical district posed challenges, requiring innovative solutions.
Elk River Estuary:
Future-Proofing Our Coastal Wetlands
Greenway has been supporting the City of Eureka’s efforts to mitigate sea level rise at the Elk River estuary since 2014. This project aims to restore inter-tidal wetland habitats on up to 223 acres of former bay lands, coordinating with multiple stakeholders and property owners. The restoration involves eradicating invasive species and supporting native ecosystems, benefiting wildlife while providing recreational opportunities and enhancing flood protection for the community.
Lacks Creek:
Building a New Trail Network
Greenway collaborated with Fogline Trail Systems and the Humboldt Trails Council to create over 11 miles of new single track mountain bike trails on Bureau of Land Management property near Arcata, CA. Working with the BLM’s Lacks Creek Management Area team, the project aimed to boost sustainable recreation. Greenway oversaw the design, construction, and management of the trails, including features like downhill routes and signage installation.
