Food Sovereignty: Yurok Tribe Fish Processing Feasibility

The Yurok Tribe has long sought a culturally-relevant fish processing plant to benefit tribal members and local fisheries. Working with tribal staff as well as the Yurok Economic Development Corporation, Greenway created a Basis of Design for an 8,500 sqft facility with a multi-functional commercial kitchen/food processing center.

The commercial kitchen was intended to be capable of processing salmon caught in the Klamath River by Yurok tribal members, as well as fish and other sea foods and locally grown fruits and vegetables harvested and processed by others. The site needed to be positioned for future expansion, as well as have land and water access.

Although the fish processing plant has not come to fruition, it remains a goal of the tribe for economic, environmental, and cultural sustainability.purposes.
