Desmond Cowan

Having recently retired from a career in the fire service, Desmond comes to Greenway with 30 years of public safety experience. Over the course of his service, he worked in every job classification from Firefighter to Fire Chief, as well as managed the operations of the District.

Desmond has built many relationships with community leaders through his experience overseeing public education and community safety programs, reviewing projects and plans for compliance with the California Building and Fire Codes, and conducting site and building inspections.

As a Project Manager with Greenway, he is responsible for business development, grant management and project execution. His community relationships, vision, and desire to improve organizations and processes shape his work with Greenway. Working with Greenway, Desmond continues on his path supporting leaders as they create positive and sustainable changes for the betterment of our community.

Desmond has been engaged in multiple areas of our community, serving as a volunteer firefighter in both Eureka and Arcata, and volunteering with the American Heart Association fund-raising events. Desmond worked for the Humboldt County Office of Education as a Fire Service Training Program Instructor for five years. He also held positions with the City of Arcata Transportation Safety Committee as well as the Oversight Board to the Successor Agency (Redevelopment Agency) and is currently a member of the Rotary Club of Arcata.

Originally from Santa Barbra, Desmond has lived in Humboldt County for over 30 years. He and his wife, Jeanne, have two sons and reside in Arcata. He enjoys backpacking, house boating, snowboarding, reading, and listening to Metal (don’t let the bowtie fool you).
