Fostering Innovation and Entrepreneurship
In Spring 2011 Greenway developed the report “Developing the Seedbed for Arcata’s Emerging Entrepreneurs,” which analyzed the feasibility of entrepreneurship as a key economic development strategy for the City of Arcata. The report won the 2012 American Planning Association’s (APA) Grassroots Initiative Award of Merit for the APA’s Northern California Section.
In developing the report, the project team, led by Greenway Principal David Narum, synthesized primary and secondary research to identify approaches to fostering entrepreneurship in Arcata and the broader region. Interviews with local business, industry and government stakeholders, as well as research on current entrepreneurship and related economic development theory, informed the
report findings.
And in addition to the extensive research undertaken, the project entailed directing subcontractor Planwest Partners staff on research, and coordinating with City of Arcata staff on the project scope and deliverables. The research results and recommendations were presented during a regular session of the Arcata City Council for the Council’s recognition and approval.
The report provides examples and stories of local entrepreneurs, and outlines numerous practical and actionable recommendations for the City of Arcata, including: 1) developing a comprehensive entrepreneurship development strategy, 2) streamlining bureaucratic processes, 3) engaging in more collaborative strategizing, and 4) leveraging local knowledge and expertise to co-create solutions. The report also outlines models for physical spaces, such as the Link, now being developed by Greenway.
